Airpollution in Dublin

Main Sources of Air Pollution

Several major sources contribute to air pollution in Ireland, with Dublin being a notable area of concern. By understanding these sources, we can better tackle the pollution problem and improve our overall health.

The main contributors to air pollution in Ireland are the burning of solid fuels for home heating and emissions from road transport. These pollutants, especially Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), pose serious health risks, especially in urban areas like Dublin.

Sources of Particulate Matter (PM2.5)

Solid Fuel Burning:

The primary source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Dublin involves burning coal, peat, and wood for home heating. Inefficient in open fires and stoves, releasing unburnt particles into the air. Responsible for approximately 1,300 premature deaths annually in Ireland, air pollution also causes someone to visit an emergency department for asthma every four minutes and results in one death from asthma every six days.

Construction Sites :

Large development sites contribute to elevated levels of PM2.5, particularly through dust and other particulate emissions.

Sources of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)

Nitrogen oxides, specifically nitrogen dioxide (NO2), are significant pollutants produced mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels.

Road Transport (41%)

Diesel engine vehicles emit more NO2 compared to petrol vehicles. High volume of traffic in Dublin’s urban areas substantially contributes to NO2 levels.

Off-road Machinery (3.9%)

Equipment such as earth movers and lawnmowers emit NO2. Contributes to ambient air pollution.

Industrial and Construction Activities (9.5%)

Produce NO2 through various processes and machinery operations.

Heating (6.8 %) and Electricity Generation (7.5%)

Central heating boilers and generators used for electricity and heat production release NO2 into the atmosphere.

“ It is not just about the mortalities … It is also about the impact on health and wellbeing. We have some very stark figures in Ireland where asthma rates are among the highest in Europe ”
